Both are warm, both are soft, and both are a world away from synthetic sock fillers — but they're not interchangeable. Here's how they actually compare, so you can pick the right pair for the way you live.

Warmth

Alpaca fibre is hollow at its core, which traps air and makes it noticeably warmer than merino for its weight. If you're after the warmest possible sock for cold floors, winter boots, or sitting still outdoors, alpaca socks generally win.

Softness and feel against skin

Merino wool has very fine fibres, which is why it's the wool of choice for people who find other wools itchy. It has a slightly different hand-feel to alpaca — smoother and more elastic — which some customers prefer for everyday wear against sensitive skin. Moisture management

Both fibres wick moisture away from the skin far better than cotton or acrylic, which is a big part of why wool socks don't get that damp, clammy feeling cotton socks do after a few hours. Merino has a slight edge here for high-activity days, which is why it's the go-to for walkers and runners.

Durability and shape retention

Alpaca tends to hold its shape and resist pilling slightly better over repeated wear, since the fibre doesn't have the same elastic memory issues finer wools can develop. Merino, especially when blended with a touch of nylon (as ours is), stands up very well too — the blend is what gives our merino socks their shape retention wash after wash.
