Most mass-market socks are made from polyester, nylon, or acrylic — synthetic fibres that are cheap to produce at scale but fall short in almost every way that actually affects comfort. Breathability and temperature regulation
Natural fibres like wool have a complex cellular structure that actively regulates temperature, keeping feet warm in the cold and cool when it's warm. Synthetic fibres are essentially plastic filaments — they trap heat and moisture rather than managing it, which is why synthetic socks so often feel clammy after a few hours.
Odour resistance
Wool contains lanolin, a naturally antibacterial compound that inhibits the bacteria responsible for foot odour. That's why a wool sock can be worn for a full day — or several days on a long walk — and still smell fresher than a synthetic sock worn for a few hours. Synthetic fibres, by contrast, are notorious for trapping odour permanently, no matter how many washes they get.
Durability that actually saves you money
Good quality wool is remarkably hardwearing when cared for properly, often outlasting synthetic equivalents by several washing seasons. Buying fewer, better pairs is not just a comfort upgrade — it works out cheaper over time and creates far less textile waste.
Biodegradability
Synthetic fibres are, chemically, plastic — they shed microplastics in the wash and take centuries to break down in landfill. Natural fibres like alpaca and merino are fully biodegradable, returning to the earth in the same way wool has for thousands of years.
