Sock Sizing Guide: How to Get the Perfect Fit Every Time

It's easy to assume sock sizing barely matters — surely wool stretches to fit? To a point, yes, but the wrong size sock will bunch at the toe, slip at the heel, or squeeze the arch, undoing all the comfort benefits of a well-made natural fibre sock. Here's how to get it right the first time.

Measure, don't guess from shoe size

Shoe sizing varies by brand and style, but sock sizing is based on actual foot length. Stand on a piece of paper, mark your heel and longest toe, and measure the distance in centimetres. This is the number to match against a sizing chart, rather than relying on your usual shoe size.

Consider width, not just length

If you have a narrower or wider foot than average, look for styles noted as having stretch panels or a more generous knit — our merino and mohair blends both have good give at the instep, which accommodates a wider range of foot shapes comfortably.

Different socks, different ideal fits

Bed socks and lounge socks are generally cut a little looser and softer, since they're not doing any work against a shoe. Walking and boot socks should fit snugly with no excess fabric, since a loose sock inside a boot is a fast route to blisters on longer walks. If you're between our size bands, size down for boot and walking styles, and size up for bed and lounge styles.

Small feet and larger sizes

If standard adult sizing runs too big, our small feet collection is designed specifically for petite and smaller adult foot sizes, so you're not stuck wearing a sock that was really designed for someone two sizes up.

Still unsure?
